The Eilandje, the old port district
The city’s north, called the Eilandje, is bustling as never before. Plan a visit to the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom), or go to the rooftop for a 360° view of the city (free entrance). Look for relatives in the Red Star Line Museum who took the Red Star Line Ship from Antwerp to New York hoping for a better future in the early 20th Century. Admire the latest architecture jewel, the Port House designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid. After these inspiring visits you deserve a coffee or dinner in one of the trendy coffebars and restaurants with view to the Willemdok Marina. Jump on your A-Velo shared bike and discover Het Eilandje.
Well known street for antiques, brocante, vintage and interior design shops. De Kloosterstraat is also worth visiting on Sunday when all the shops are open.
During the day the Theatre District is very charming with many fashion, antique and interior design shops, as well as two little museums. On Sunday hit for the must-visit market Vogelenmarkt (Bird market), or the international market on Saturday. While in the evening enjoy a theatre, ballet or rock opera in the Stadsschouwburg.
Without doubt, the Meir is the most famous shopping street in Antwerp and also car-free.
